Jack Johnson

Created with soft pastels on museum-quality, heavyweight, acid-free watercolor paper,

this work incorporates an archival newspaper article about Jack Johnson’s historic 1910

fight against Jim Jefferies, brought out of retirement to challenge him. I toned the

surface with watercolor to create an aged effect and added a mixture of clear acrylic gel

and sand—applied more heavily in the boy’s hair and T-shirt to create the look of

textured hair and soft cotton balls on his t-shirt. Over this layered foundation, I drew a

young boy gazing up at an overhead punching bag, oversized gloves on his hands

marked with the date 7.4.1910. This symbolic scene reflects dreaming beyond limits,

honoring Johnson as the first African-American heavyweight champion and his fight

against both opponents and the barriers of his time.
