In His Shadow (Barack Obama)
Created with soft pastels on museum-quality, heavyweight, acid-free sanded pastel
paper, this work depicts a young boy in a blue blazer, white shirt, and khaki pants
reading President Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope. Sunlight casts his shadow
onto a brick wall adorned with a mural of Obama. Etched into the wall are “2009 –
2017,” marking his presidential terms, along with “We the People,” the U.S. Capitol, the
White House, stars and stripes, and the number 44. Coming out of the crack of the
ground is a yellow hibiscus, the Hawaii state flower, symbolizing Obama’s birthplace.
Above the flower are two metallic bricks: one shaped like Kansas, where his mother
was born, and one shaped like Kenya, representing his father’s birthplace. The boy’s
book bag rests on the ground with a U.S. flag tucked inside. This layered imagery
honors Obama’s historic presidency, his diverse roots, and his enduring influence on
leadership, hope, and unity.
